Though the kümmel-spiked Silver Bullet (gin, kümmel, lemon juice) is alleged to be Prince Philip’s favorite cocktail, bartender Ali Reynolds likes to use the savory spirit—whose taste he describes as ranging from white chocolate to pink peppercorn to olive tapenade to walnut—in his The Night Shining.

“I wanted to create a more robust, stirred, down drink,” he explains, in contrast to kümmel’s usual appearance in shaken, citrusy drinks. Here, he stirs it with Campari and aged rum, where “the olive flavors I pick up from Ron Zacapa 23 work well with the caraway and chocolate notes.”

Ingredients

Serving: 1

  • 1 1/2 ounces rum, preferably Ron Zacapa 23
  • 1/2 ounce kümmel
  • 1/6 ounce Campari
  • 2 dashes bitters, preferably Adam Elmegirab's Boker's Bitters

Garnish: lemon twist

Directions
  1. Combine ingredients with ice in a mixing glass and stir.
  2. Strain into rocks glass with one rock and garnish with lemon twist.
