Tip Your Bartender: Nightmoves, New York

May 18, 2020

Story: Punch Staff

art: Nick Hensley

Nightmoves’ Orlando Franklin McCray reimagines the Presidente cocktail to bring it in line with modern sensibilities.

Tip Your Bartender is a social media initiative from PUNCH connecting our readers with bar teams across the country via Instagram. We’re asking select bartenders to share their drinks (albeit virtually) and encourage the PUNCH audience to “tip” during the economically uncertain times ahead.

Between March 30th and May 29th, for every dollar tipped to bar teams, the Bacardi family of brands has generously committed to matching it with an equal gift to our charitable partner, Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation.

A Better Presidente

Orlando Franklin McCray, Nightmoves | Brooklyn, New York

If Nightmoves’ Orlando Franklin McCray sees a Presidente on a menu, he’ll order it out of curiosity. But more often than not, classic specs for the stirred rum cocktail don’t work well for the modern palate. His version takes a split-base approach, using both a blended rum and fuller-bodied aged rum.

¾ ounce Santa Teresa 1796 rum
¾ ounce Banks 5 rum
1 ounce Noilly Prat Extra Dry vermouth
½ ounce grenadine
1 teaspoon dry Curaçao
3 dashes orange bitters

Garnish: orange twist

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir until properly chilled and diluted, then strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass. Express oils from orange twist over the glass, and discard the twist.

Order Banks 5 and Santa Teresa 1796 for this recipe via Drizly.
