The Category Is…

Lorenzo Cyril, Chinese Tuxedo | New York, New York

“The Category Is…” is Lorenzo Cyril’s homage to the NYC ballroom scene and culture. For decades NYC ballroom, ball and house culture has provided a space for queer Black and Latinx to have a sense of community, providing respite from an outside society that devalued their lives and denied their presence. Walking in a ball under various “categories” that canvased race, class and gender, the ball community has historically reflected the American Dream and the participants’ exclusion from it. Cyril’s floral Martini variation captures the ball scene’s opulence with vivid butterfly pea flower tea.

2 ½ ounces butterfly pea flower-infused Grey Goose vodka (see Editors’ Note)
½ ounce Martini Rossi Ambrato vermouth
¼ ounce manzanilla sherry
2 dashes lavender bitters
2 dashes orange bitters 

Garnish: orange peel

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir until well chilled and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with an orange peel.

Editors’ Note

Butterfly Pea Flower-Infused Grey Goose
750 mL Grey Goose vodka
20 grams butterfly pea flower tea 

In a non-reactive container, combine tea and vodka. Let sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes, agitating or stirring occasionally. Strain through a fine strainer and rebottle until ready to use.
