Beer Made with Space Yeast Is Now a Reality

Oregon-based Ninkasi Brewing Co. sent six vials of brewers yeast to space, and soon beer made from the galactic substance will be available to drink, reports io9. “Ground Control” is an imperial stout that was brewed last year with yeast that traveled 77.3 miles in altitude on a rocket in October of 2014.

According to the company, after taking a ride with private spaceflight corporation UP Aerospace Inc., the yeast returned “healthy, hungry and viable” and was “cold-transported back to Ninkasi’s lab in Eugene, where it was propagated and tested before being used to ferment its first beer, Ground Control.”

Brewed with Oregon hazelnuts, star anise and cocoa nibs, the stout will be available starting April 13th in limited edition 22 ounce bottles at select retailers in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Alberta and Vancouver, British Columbia.
