Dennis Rodman Apologizes for Drunken Ranting in CNN Interview

Following an incredibly uncomfortable interview on CNN  in which a cigar-toting Dennis Rodman “implied that American citizen Kenneth Bae, who is imprisoned in North Korea, did something to deserve his punishment,” Rodman has released a statement admitting he had been drinking prior to the interview, according to NPR. (Bae, a former tourism  businessman was recently sentenced to 15 years in a North Korean labor camp.) While former NBA player Charles Smith defended “basketball diplomacy” in North Korea to CNN’s Chris Cuomo, Rodman jumped in with his own barely intelligible rant, in which he denounced in an apology to Kenneth Bae’s family. After the interview, Rodman jaunted off for a very Marilyn Monroe moment singing “Happy Birthday” to North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong Un. American government representatives are now left to assess the damage and hope that Rodman’s deplorable behavior has not fully compromised diplomatic efforts toward Bae’s release. [NPR]
