Philly Sports Bar Owes Employees $6.8 Million in Withheld Wages

Chickie’s and Pete’s, a Philly-based sports bar chain with nine locations, is paying over $6.8 million in back wages and damages to 1,159 employees. Eater reports on the company’s unethical practices, such as withholding overtime pay and collecting “Pete’s tax”—an illegal pool from which owners kept 60% of the cash they forced employees to contribute from part of their tips. The Department of Labor details the “egregious” crimes perpetrated against some of the lowest paid workers in the country by the owners of Chickie’s and Pete’s in their investigative report. Can’t say we were ever dying to try the strip-mall bar’s “sensational seafood” and draft beer, but now we’re seriously turned off.  [Eater] [Photo: Chickie’s and Pete’s]
