Dale DeGroff’s Whiskey Smash

The smash, as a category of drink, had been lost to time when Dale DeGroff put out this fresh-fruit answer to the Mint Julep in 1988.


Serving: 1

  • 1 1/2 ounces bourbon
  • 1 ounce water
  • 3/4 ounce simple syrup
  • 1/4 lemon, cut into two
  • 3 mint leaves

Garnish: mint sprig

  1. Muddle syrup, water, lemon and mint in a cocktail shaker.
  2. Add bourbon. Shake with ice until chilled.
  3. Strain into rocks glass over crushed ice.
  4. Garnish with mint sprig.
