Holland Gin Cocktail

Erik Adkins, The Slanted Door | San Francisco

Erik Adkins is well versed in Curaçao’s versatility, showcasing the orange liqueur in the classic cocktail list alongside spirits both dark and light. Here, a small measure of Curaçao complements the juniper-heavy genever and the dash of orange bitters in his streamlined riff on Jerry Thomas’s Improved Holland Gin Cocktail, served, nontraditionally, on the rocks.

Serving: 1

  • 2 ounces genever, preferably Bols
  • 1 barspoon gum syrup, preferably Small Hands Food
  • 1 barspoon Curaçao, preferably Grand Marnier
  • 1 dash orange bitters

Garnish: grapefruit peel

  1. Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass and stir with ice.
  2. Strain into a double Old-Fashioned glass over a large ice cube.
  3. Garish with a grapefruit peel.
