Tico Kafés

John Perry Yates | Brooklyn, NY

Dark, foamy and unfiltered is how most Greeks take their coffee, but instead of the traditional Loumidis or Bravo grounds, this drink uses freshly-ground Costa Rican beans. Created by illustrator John Perry Yates for the 2014 World Cup match between Greece and Costa Rica, the Tico Kafés mixes the anise flavor of ouzo with coffee, similar to Italy’s caffè coretto alla sambuca.

Serving: 1

  • 1 ounce ouzo
  • 2 teaspoons coffee, Costa Rican (finely ground)
  • 3 ounces water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  1. Add coffee, sugar and water to a Bikri (or a small pot) and boil until foamy.
  2. Pour, unfiltered, into a coffee cup.
  3. Add ouzo and stir.
