Trader Vic created a number of variations on the sour, which call on various base spirits and a variety of different types of citrus. Here, Jelani Johnson offers a template that works equally well with bourbon, Scotch, or brandy as the base.

Trader Vic’s Sour

Ingredients
Serving: 1
2 ounces Scotch, bourbon, or brandy
2 ounces Scotch, bourbon, or brandy
3/4 ounce lemon juice
3/4 ounce lemon juice
1/2 ounce orgeat
1/2 ounce orgeat
1/4 ounce simple syrup
1/4 ounce simple syrup
Garnish: orchid, flag, or other fruit garnish
Directions
Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker.
Add ice and shake until chilled, about 10 seconds.
Strain into a double rocks glass filled with ice.
Garnish with an orchid and a flag.
