This version of the Ward Eight, created in collaboration with David Wondrich, gets a nutty complexity thanks to the addition of a half-ounce of palo cortado sherry, a trick gleaned from a 1934 column in the New York Sun.

Ingredients
Serving: 1
- 1 1/2 ounces rye whiskey, preferably Rittenhouse
- 1/2 ounce sherry, preferably Lustau Palo Cortado Peninsula
- 1/2 ounce lemon juice
- 1/2 ounce grenadine
- 1/4 ounce orange juice
- 1 1/2 ounces soda
Garnish: pineapple disc
Directions
- Combine all ingredients in tin, add ice and shake.
- Strain into an ice-filled goblet, top with soda and garnish with a pineapple disc.
