Tip Your Bartender: Spanglish & Grails, Miami

Modernize your rum Manhattan with the Clásico 1934, a tribute to the year The Real Havana Club was founded.

Tip Your Bartender is a social media initiative from PUNCH connecting our readers with bar teams across the country via Instagram. We’re asking select bartenders to share their drinks (albeit virtually) and encourage the PUNCH audience to “tip” during the economically uncertain times ahead.

Between March 30th and May 29th, for every dollar tipped to bar teams, the Bacardi family of brands has generously committed to matching it with an equal gift to our charitable partner, Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation.

Clásico 1934

A classic is a classic, no matter the year. Modernize your rum Manhattan with the Clásico 1934, a tribute to the year The Real Havana Club was founded. The bar smokes the final drink, but if you’re making it at home, a simple twist of orange will elegantly elevate all of the flavors of the cocktail.

2 ounces Havana Club Añejo Clásico or Bacardi 4
¾ ounce Martini & Rossi sweet vermouth
½ ounce Amaro Averna (see Editors’ Note)
2 dashes Angostura orange bitters

Glassware: Small brandy glass or a chilled Nick & Nora
Garnish: Orange peel, expressed and discarded

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice. Stir until diluted and well chilled (about 10 seconds). Strain into a small brandy glass over a small block of ice (1” x 2” cube recommended) or into a chilled Nick & Nora. Express orange peel over drink and discard.

Editors’ Note

This recipe is easily modified. Don’t have Averna? The bar team recommends substituting in any other amaro in its place. Don’t have amaro on hand or looking for something a little less bitter? Replace the amaro with two dashes of Angostura bitters.

Order Havana Club Añejo Clásico, Bacardi 4 and Martini & Rossi Sweet Vermouth for this cocktail for delivery via Drizly.
