The tasting notes describing the most expensive wine ever sold at auction read like something from a romance novel: “Incredible taste, rich, young and untamed. This wine should be censored.” Quartz reports on the case of 1978 Romanée-Conti that sold in Hong Kong this weekend. It went for $476,280 which works out to “an astounding $39,690 per bottle, or $6,615 per glass, at six glasses to the bottle.” The case was snatched up by a private Chinese buyer reflecting the country’s current adoration of luxury label Burgundies which has led to its 6% market share of the variety.
