To Decant or Not to Decant?

Some argue that decanting wine is helpful to avoid drinking sediment from older vintages. Others argue decanting aerates the wine allowing flavors to fully develop when exposed to agitation and air especially younger more tannic wines. Wine blogger Jeremy Parzen eschews decanting arguing that wine’s “sensual reward lies in the way that it evolves in the glass. And the unnecessary agitation of the wine can greatly affect its balance.” He also waves away the notion of drinking young wines making the point that they should be saved until their time has come. However, Parzen admits he decants wine at home because it “adds panache to our table setting and we love the beautiful colors of the win.” So there’s that. [Houston Press] [Photo: Flickr/bennings89]
