Chris Hannah, Arnaud's French 75 Bar | New Orleans

Before Mac Rebennack, the one-time King of Krewe du Vieux, threw a cup to Chris Hannah during the Mardi Gras festivities of 2010, this take on the De La Louisiane, was simply a nameless “fun flask cocktail.” In this rendition, Hannah swaps out Bénédictine for Rhum Clément’s Creole Shrubb, a more “rotund sweetener,” and trades in sweet vermouth for a dose of bitter Averna.

Serving: 1

  • 1 1/2 ounces rye
  • 3/4 ounce Averna
  • 1/4 ounce creole shrub, preferably Rhum Clément
  • 2 dashes Peychaud's bitters

Garnish: orange peel

  1. Stir all ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice.
  2. Strain and serve on the rocks.
  3. Garnish with an orange peel.
