Micah Anderson adapts the El Presidente, subbing vodka for the rum for a lighter, more delicate drink.

Welcome to a special two-week encore of “Tip Your Bartender,” a social media initiative from PUNCH connecting our readers with bar teams across the country via Instagram. Back by popular demand, we’re bringing a new group of drink-makers from across the country to revisit the classics—from the spritz to the El Presidente.

Between June 15th and June 26th, for every dollar tipped to bar teams, the Bacardi family of brands has generously committed to matching it with an equal gift to our charitable partner, Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation.

El Presidente

Micah Anderson, Rum Club | Portland, Oregon

Typically made with rum, the El Presidente is a close cousin to the classic Martini that's said to have originated in Cuba. The cocktail skews rich and full-bodied, but subbing vodka for the rum results in a lighter, more delicate drink.

2 ounces Grey Goose vodka
¾ ounce dry vermouth
½ ounce orange Curaçao
1 barspoon Grenadine (See Editors' Note)

Garnish: expressed orange peel

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice and stir until well chilled. Strain into a cocktail glass, express orange peel over the drink and discard.

Editors’ Note

Grenadine

1 cup pomegranate juice
1/2 cup white granulated sugar
peel of half an orange

Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir until sugar has dissolved, and set aside to cool. Strain into a bottle and refrigerate for up to one week.
