“I had read in some cooking manual or been told by a chef that anise paired well with red fruits,” says Seattle bartender Andrew Bohrer on how he first started using Strega. “I first began using it in a drink with gin and fresh raspberries.” His Bruja Smash doesn’t stray too far from that early attempt and pairs Strega with tequila, lemon, mint and raspberries for a savory-fruity riff on a classic smash.

Ingredients
Serving: 1
- 1 ounce tequila
- 1 ounce Strega
- 1/4 ounce lemon juice
- 6-9 mint leaves
- 4-6 raspberries
- simple syrup to taste
Garnish: Mint sprig
Directions
- Combine all ingredients in a shaking tin, then add ice and shake.
- Strain over crushed ice.
- Top with additional crushed ice.
- Garnish with a mint sprig.
